Traders Bracing For Slump Drive Up Platinum, Wheat, Coffee And Cocoa

Platinum and spring wheat hit record highs Thursday and arabica coffee and cocoa set new trading peaks as well, as investors in commodities pursued markets deemed less vulnerable to the slowing U.S. economy.

Copper, an economically sensitive base metal, overcame jitters over U.S. growth by reacting to Wednesday's cut in interest rates. Traders said copper was also inspired by Thursday's rebound in Wall Street stocks and lingering production issues in China.

But broad commodity futures indexes closed mixed, with the Reuters-Jefferies CRB and Dow Jones-AIG up and the S&P GSCI down.

U.S. crude oil also fell, closing 58 cents lower at $91.75 a barrel on fears of slowing growth in the world's largest economy and the leading energy-consuming nation. Investors in energy were also sidelined ahead of an OPEC meeting on production quotas set for Friday.

Speculators are facing a financial judgment day, and a great ...

Following the Great Depression of the 1930s, many people were fearful of any kind of debt. Many lost everything they had that wasnt paid for free and clear; debt was genuinely something to fear.

For decades afterward, debt was viewed as a tool of the devil, to be shied away from at all cost. The generation of people who grew up in this era lived frugally, focusing more on saving than on spending. If they did go into debt, it was to purchase a home in which to live.

In the Pivotal Fracture Trial an increased number of cases of atrial fibrillation serious adverse events were observed in women given Aclasta compared to those on placebo (1.3% vs. 0.6% respectively). However, this finding has not been observed in other clinical studies or in post-marketing experience with over 1.5 million patients treated with zoledronic acid for oncology indications. In the Recurrent Fracture Trial, atrial fibrillation serious adverse events occurred in 1.1% of Aclasta-treated patients compared to 1.3% of placebo-treated patients. No spontaneous reports of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) a rare occurrence in the osteoporosis population treated with bisphosphonates were seen in either the Pivotal Fracture Trial or Recurrent Fracture Trial.

Report Raises Alarm over 'Superweeds'

It's been 12 years since the first genetically modified crop was sown in the U.S., and controversy has raged since. Now, another salvo has been launched, in the form of a new report from environmental activist organization Friends of the Earth International and the Center for Food Safety, a Washington (D.C.) advocacy group. Called Who Benefits from GM Crops?, the study examines the emergence of "superweeds" that have developed a resistance to conventional herbicides such as Monsanto's (MON) Roundup. The culprits, says the report, are plants like corn, soybeans, and cotton that have been genetically modified to survive Roundup. Farmers can spray their fields and the weeds will die but the crops will thrive.

As more acres of "Roundup Ready" crops are planted, the use of the pesticide has increased.

Mr Hudson, I will do as you say!, I will protest..... I protest at people like you coming on Km message boards slagging Gills off at every opportune moment. Sure, the results aren't great at present, but the management and playing staff need all our support at this differcult time. The fans need to stick together and act as a 12th man. I would worry if the Rainham End was full of Dave Hudsons. we would definitely be relegated with their attitude. if you're that worried about the dross at the KRBS, don't bother coming. Following the Gills loyally is through thick and thin. Onwards and upwards UP THE GILLS

Stocks Slip Ahead Of U.S. Data, Sterling Up

Caution ahead of key U.S. retail sales data on Wednesday prompted investors to pare some gains in stocks while tough talk on inflation by the Bank of England helped boost sterling.

Though rising off early lows, stocks were still in the red with investors taking risky bets off the table in case the U.S. report, due at 1330 GMT, showed more weakness in the world's biggest economy than already anticipated.

A weakening consumer sector, which accounts for more than two thirds of the U.S. economy, has fuelled concerns that a recession is increasingly likely.

Also worrying was fresh data showing much weaker than expected euro zone industrial output in December -- another sign of a global slowdown.

"Euro zone growth is in trouble and the ECB had better get its skates on for easing soon," said David Brown, chief European economist at Bear Sterns International.
